Urumqi Airport is the gateway into Northwest China and the capital of Xinjiang province. Its airport is growing fast and in 2008 was building its third terminal for a maximum of 16m passengers, which required world-class retail.
InterVISTAS was asked to develop a comprehensive retail plan. The traffic is predominantly domestic but the international share is growing. Both markets require a different retail offer. Chinese customers have a different visiting and purchasing pattern in check-in and arrival halls than European customers.
This complexity had to be translated in smart concepts for all terminal areas. 3.720 m2 of shops and 3.285 m2 of food & beverage would raise the retail spend per passenger from a very low amount to at least € 3.75 for international and € 2.00 for domestic passengers in the 2nd full year of operation.
