The Yellowknife Airport and the City of Yellowknife experienced strong growth since the late 1980’s as a result of a robust economy – with the airport being the gateway to the North and the City being the Diamond Capital of North America. With traffic having experienced record growth and continuously exceeding national growth rates during this period, a renewed program for airport expansion and facility redevelopment was needed.
InterVISTAS prepared two comprehensive Development Plans for the airport – the first in 2004 and an update in 2007 to reflect even stronger traffic growth than originally foreseen for the Canadian North. Our planning team was commissioned to validate runway expansion and taxiway development requirements, review the operational viability of the existing air terminal building and develop a strategy to enable redevelopment of the air terminal complex on a Greenfield site.
The Yellowknife Airport Development Plan provides the Government of the Northwest Territories with a program for the long-term development of the facility and is being used to support the legislative approvals process for capital funding of major projects.
