Coast Hotels is a North American hotel brand with locations in British Columbia, Alberta, Northwest Territories, the Yukon, Washington State, Oregon, California, and Alaska. As an environmentally-conscious organization, Coast Hotels wanted to know its carbon footprint from a number of its properties in support of the introduction of its eCoast program to enable guests to purchase carbon offsets for their visits and for meeting organizers to offer green meetings. InterVISTAS was asked to help quantify the average greenhouse gas emissions per available hotel room night and to develop a carbon calculator for meetings at its facilities.
InterVISTAS conducted comprehensive greenhouse gas inventories for a representative sample of properties for Coast Hotels for several fiscal years. The reports followed the accounting and reporting guidelines of The Greenhouse Gas Protocol: A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, Revised Edition published by World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and were prepared in accordance with ISO 14064-1 standards.
The carbon footprint per available hotel room night was estimated based on a weighted average of property sizes (hotel rooms) and geographic location. This enabled Coast Hotels to launch its eCoast carbon offset program with the Pacific Carbon Trust. In fact, the estimates that were provided in “Coast Hotels & Resorts: Greenhouse Gas Report Fiscal Year 2009” are used by the British Columbia Ministry of Environment’s “2013 B.C. Best Practices Methodology for Quantifying Greenhouse Gas Emissions” guidance material.
