CN Rail was considering development of an intermodal yard in Prince George, B.C. to support the initiation of container services at Port Prince Rupert. Inbound demand for container traffic to the U.S. Midwest was clear but CN needed to identify opportunities for export container traffic to Asia.
InterVISTAS prepared and presented a feasibility analysis for development of an intermodal yard at Prince George to support the containerized export of forest products such as lumber and pulp to Asian markets. The initiative was led by the regional economic development organization, Initiatives Prince George, and CN supported the study with funding and participation in the project. The report identified significant opportunities for movement of forest products by truck to the yard for stuffing in containers for export to Asia.
CN Rail proceeded with construction of the intermodal yard and has subsequently increased its capacity.
